iGP Manager is the odd one out on a hockey desk, but it earned its place by doing something none of the others do: it makes you decide live. Its own press kit describes a massively multiplayer online motorsport manager game in which you develop cars and technology, determine setups and race in real time against other people, with your strategy deciding championships.
The game was released for browsers on 11 December 2011, arrived on Android and iOS in March 2017, and comes from iGP Games in London. The press kit credits former racing driver Jack Basford with founding it, and says 3D graphics and wheel-to-wheel racing arrived by 2021. It is free, and in our time with it, it was the game we talked about most.
Pit calls, tyre wear and the weather turning
The live race is the reason to play. The operator lists the decisions: plan pit stops, manage tyre wear and fuel, react to changing weather and make strategic calls in real time. When a shower arrives mid-race and you have to decide whether to bring your driver in now or trust it to pass, the game delivers a jolt of tension no other manager on our shelf can match.
The press kit adds team orders and live weather streamed from real-world circuits, and you feel the consequences instantly. A good call gains places; a slow one costs them. This is also where the game asks the most of you: a set-and-forget approach wastes its best feature. Plan to watch your races, and treat the result as feedback on the calls you made.
Developing the car between races
Between races, you build the team. The operator invites you to create your car, hire and manage drivers and staff, and develop the team for long-term success across seasons. The press kit fills in the detail: upgrading cars, building facilities, training your team and investing in technology. This is the slower, management half of the game.
We found the balance pleasant. The development side gives you something to think about on non-race days, and the payoff arrives on track when a well-chosen upgrade brings you closer to the front. It is not as intricate as BuzzerBeater’s depth chart, but it gives every decision a visible link to results, which keeps the loop satisfying.
Sprints for busy nights, championships for the committed
iGP Manager lets you choose your commitment. The operator describes quick sprint races alongside full-length championships, and the press kit says race length and timing can be customised and that you can create your own championships. For a busy reader, that flexibility is a gift: you can play a short race on a weeknight or sign up for a full season.
Live races do bring one practical issue. You need to be there when your league runs, and if your rivals are spread across the world, the scheduled times may not suit your evenings. Check the timing before you join a league. The press kit lists 25 international circuits, so the calendar keeps its variety across a season.
Onboard cameras, rivals and the mobile app
The 3D race presentation is the most polished on our shelf. According to the press kit, iGP Manager was the first game in its genre to offer onboard and TV camera views comparable to traditional racing games, and it does make races easy to follow. Wheel-to-wheel battles are fun to watch, especially when it is your driver fighting for a place.
You can race online with friends or head-to-head against real people from around the world, and the apps on Android and iOS make it easy to follow a race away from the desk. The trade-off for all this excitement is commitment: the game is at its best when you show up, and less rewarding if you only check in now and then.
iGP Manager: the opening fixtures
- Register free, create your team and spend some time understanding your car, drivers and staff.
- Join a quick sprint race first to learn the live controls before committing to a championship.
- Watch the race live and practise pit timing, tyre choices and responses to changing weather.
- Make one development choice between races and note whether it changes your pace on track.
- Check league race times against your time zone before signing up for a full season.
What we love
- Live pit calls and weather changes deliver real race-day tension
- Sprint races and full championships suit different weeks
- 3D races with onboard and TV views are easy to follow
- Car development links clearly to results on track
What grates
- You need to be present for races to get the best from it
- League race times may not suit every evening at home
- No hockey here, so it serves as a change of pace
The coach iGP Manager suits
Players who love making decisions under pressure and want a manager game that feels like an event. If you would rather be on the pit wall reacting to a rain shower than setting orders and reading a report later, iGP Manager gives you that thrill more than anything else here.
iGP Manager: final whistle
iGP Manager is the most exciting game on our shelf. Live pit calls, tyre and fuel management and sudden weather make every race an event, and car development gives the days between a purpose. It ranks fifth only because it asks you to show up at set times and has no hockey, but for a change of pace it is superb.
